We have this huge 20 plus foot tall crape myrtle in our back yard in the city. After much tree trimming we had a stack of branches laying there ready to break down and move out of the yard.
I started planting peppers in the spring and I when realized the crape myrtle branches were so nice and straight, I cut sections to stake my pepper plants. Hey why pay for plant stakes when you have them in your own back yard?
I had three almost perfectly straight sticks that I placed next to my plants to secure their future growth. I wasn't thinking and if I had even thought about it, I would have paid attention to what DIRECTION I put the stakes in!! One day I was watering my peppers and I saw leaves coming out of the top of one of my stakes! OMG! The stake I had set in, with the natural growth direction UP, was growing a new plant!
Now I know this is not rocket science, but what a nice surprise to have a new plant starting that I can replant somewhere else. This one is going to the country house!
So next time you go to cutting on your crape myrtles, maybe ask yourself if you want another one and which side is up when you put it in the ground!
